Participant 1: Bernard P. Coy (AZ-415)
Barney Coy was in his early forties, a tall slender man with bushy eyebrows and a very nervous disposition; he was constantly on the move. He was polite and friendly to everyone and yet he was not entirely trusted by either the inmates or the guards. His accommodating demeanor earned him the reputation of being a “brown-noser” in some quarters and a jink, or “stoolie,” in others (some of the “big-timers,” such as the gutless “Public Enemy” Alvin “Creepy” Karpis, were responsible for the latter label). Neither was true.
Coy was born and raised in the hills of Kentucky, hence his reputation as an illiterate hillbilly who was an expert shot with a rifle. He had little formal education but was far from stupid. He ventured into crime at an early age and was twice convicted of bank robbery. He could be mean and vicious, as he proved in Atlanta, where his assault on another inmate resulted in his transfer to Alcatraz. On the island, he tried the legal system to have his sentence reversed and, when this failed, he determined he would escape.
Coy was not at all what his appearance and demeanor indicated. He was a crafty, observant, and patient man—and he was determined to escape or die. He was a dreamer, but also a man who had courage far in excess of most of the so-called public enemies or big names of the prison. It was this man who—by personal starvation, observation, and the willingness to expose himself to an instant death—brought the ill-fated plot to maturity. It was this man who also died in his quest for an unfulfillable dream.
